Dora Byrd
Gainey
Dec 31, 1938 — Nov 19, 2025
Dora Byrd Gainey, 86, of Society Hill, SC passed away peacefully on November 19, 2025 in Florence, SC. She was born on December 31, 1938 in Hartsville, SC to the late John Thomas Byrd and Mildred Morrell Byrd.
Dora was the caring sister to her late sister Lois Hunter. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Olden Otis Gainey, with whom she shared a lifetime of memories and love. Her legacy continues through her devoted daughters, Jean Neisler (Miller) of Pageland, SC, Joyce Cato (Pat) of Pageland, SC, and Janet Oliver (Scott) of Jefferson, SC. She was a stepmother to Greg Gainey (Sylvia) of Chesterfield, SC, Lisa Smoot (Willard) of Florence, SC, Lorey McClam of Cheraw, SC, five grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.
Dora's life was marked by her love for her family, which was her greatest joy and primary focus. She found happiness in the laughter of her children and the companionship of her family members. Her home was always filled with the aroma of her cooking, and her yard bloomed with the flowers she planted with care. Dora's interests were as nurturing as her personality; she enjoyed shopping for her loved ones, reading books that stirred her imagination, and cooking meals that brought everyone to the table.
In her younger years, Dora relished the times she took her children to the beach, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she attended Welsh Neck Baptist Church in Society Hill, SC, where she found strength and community.
Dora's warmth extended beyond her family. Friends and neighbors knew her as a kind-hearted woman who always had time for a chat or to lend a helping hand. Her presence was a comfort to many, and her advice was sought after by those who knew her wisdom was matched only by her empathy.
There will be a Celebration of Life Funeral Service on Sunday, November 23, 2025 at 2:30 PM at Pageland United Methodist Church with Rev. Matthew Neisler officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park of Pageland.
