Douglas Kay Hicks, known fondly to many as Doug, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2023, in Monroe, North Carolina with his family by his side. Born on January 3, 1948, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to the late Louie Lee Hicks and Dorothy Funderburk Hicks. Doug led a full and rich life dedicated to his family, his work, and his many passions. Doug is predeceased by his brother, Darius Lee Hicks and sister-in-law Patricia Hicks.
He was a loving and devoted husband to Brenda Hicks, his wife of 55 years. Together, they raised two beautiful daughters, Amy Jordan (Chris) of Lancaster, SC and Melony McNeil (John) of Pageland, SC. Doug's love for his family extended to his twin brother, Dennis Hicks of Pageland, SC; grandchildren, Julia and Emma Jordan, and Cody, Christa, and Carmen McNeil. His great-grandchildren, Ayden, Kenzlee, Makenzie, Greyson, Mason, Spencer, Remi, and Harmony, were the joy of his later years.
Professionally, Doug made significant contributions to his community and beyond. He was a startup engineer with Nuclear Power, demonstrating his aptitude for complex problem-solving and innovation. Later, he ran a motel at Oak Island for about four years, where he was known for his warm hospitality and strong work ethic. Doug also served his community as a deputy with the Chesterfield County Sheriff Dept.
Doug was a man of diverse interests and talents. He was a proud member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church, where he also showcased his woodworking skills by contributing to much of the church's woodwork. His love for woodworking was not just confined to the church; he was a skilled carpenter who took great pride in his craft. Doug was also a Mason with Mt. Moriah Lodge #58, further demonstrating his commitment to service and fraternity.
Beyond his work and service, Doug knew how to enjoy life. He was an avid golfer and loved to go deep-sea fishing. He cherished the time he spent at Oak Island, where he could combine his love for the sea, fishing, and his motel business. Doug enjoyed playing his guitar, singing and was a talented song writer. Doug's zest for life was infectious, and he was known for his loving, passionate, and funny personality.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at Liberty Hill Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. There will be a Celebration of Life Funeral Service at 3:15 PM on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at Liberty Hill Baptist Church with Pastor Mack Mullis officiating. Burial will follow in Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Masonic Rites.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Hicks Family C/O Amy Jordan to help with medical bills, 5129 Mill Race Lane, Lancaster, SC 29720.
