Robert Maurice Scherer, Sr., of Pageland, SC, died on Monday, August 12, 2013 at Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, Michigan. He was 76. Robert (Bob) was born on June 26, 1937 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Albert and Mildred (Sours) Scherer. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in teaching from Concordia University and a Master's Degree in Academic Administration from Eastern Michigan University. In 1958, Bob married his college sweetheart, Eleanor (Ellie) Sanzo, of Detroit, Michigan. Together, they had four children, Anna, Rebecca, Karen, and Robert, Jr. Early in his career, Bob worked as a teacher and a principal at Lutheran Parochial Schools in Indianapolis and the metropolitan Detroit area. While his children were growing, he worked with the Livonia, Michigan public school system. Later, he and Ellie relocated to South Carolina, where Bob taught at Pageland Middle School until his retirement in 2004. A man of great faith, throughout the years Bob served as a Lay Minister, Chaplain, and Assistant Pastor. He volunteered as a mentor through the Juvenile Justice System, and was instrumental in establishing and operating a food bank in Chesterfield County. Those who knew him will remember Bob's kind heart, gentle spirit, and upbeat attitude. He will be greatly missed. Predeceased by Ellie in January of this year, last Friday Bob would have celebrated with her their 55th wedding anniversary. Robert is survived by his son, Robert Scherer, Jr. (Melissa) of Pageland, SC; his daughters, Anna Wambaugh (Richard) of Van Buren Twp., MI, Rebecca Hanlon (Tim), of Blythewood, SC, Karen Edwards (David) of Columbia, SC; brother Ronald Scherer (Lizbeth) of St. Clair Shores, MI; grandchildren Richard Wambaugh, Jr., Eryn Hanlon, Joseph Wambaugh, Timothy Hanlon, Jr., Bobby Outen, Cassie Outen-Smith, Colby Edwards, and Kyle Edwards; and great-grandchildren Payton Outen, Leo Condon-Wambaugh, and Ellie Hanlon. A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held at the Baumgartner Funeral Home in Pageland, SC, on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at 3 o'clock pm. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 2 pm.
