Mrs. Marie Barton Backus, 63, of Pageland, SC passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at CMC - Union in Monroe, NC. Mrs. Marie Barton Backus was born Saturday, May 20, 1950. She is the daughter of Ruth LaPlante Barton and the late James Barton. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Christine Letherland and sister, Sally Babcock. Mrs. Backus was the Director of Education for the Port St. Lucie Catholic Church. She attended St. Ernest Catholic Church in Pageland, SC and was a member of the Pageland Lion's Club. Mrs. Backus is survived by her husband, Harold "Bill" Backus of the home, daughter, Carolyn Letherland of San Francisco, CA, brother, James Barton of Canastota, NY, sisters, Gloria Curtis of Canastota, NY, Patricia Campbell of East Syracuse, NY, Georgia Doty of Sherrill, NY, Connie Merritt of Canastota, NY, Jan Frink of Canastota, NY, Tammy Baynes of Canastota, NY and Linda Henry of Verona, NY. A Vigil Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 PM on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Baumgartner Funeral Home Chapel located at 708 W. McGregor St., Pageland, South Carolina 29728 with Father David Michael officiating. The Backus family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Baumgartner Funeral Home, 708 W. McGregor St., Pageland, South Carolina 29728.
