Mr. Richard "Doc" Bronson Warren Mills, 77, of Pageland, SC passed away on Friday, June 10, 2022 in Pineville, NC.
Mr. Mills was born on September 11, 1944 to the late Harold Palmer Mills Jr. and Alice Means Mills.
Mr. Richard Mills was born in Boston, Massachusetts and made several places home before finding his way to Pageland 42 years ago. After graduating from South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte in 1962, he decided to enlist in the U.S. Navy and completed his basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Chicago, Illinois. After graduation from basic training, Mr. Mills received orders to the U.S. Naval Air Test Center in Maryland and was assigned to the Crash Crew. He was trained in sea-air rescue (SAR) during his training there and also on board the aircraft carrier U.S.S Saratoga. Mr. Mills served his country in the U.S. Navy/Marines, during which he did a tour in Vietnam as a medic and earned the name "Doc" by fellow service men. During his time in Vietnam he received a Purple Heart. After leaving the Navy, Mr. Mills returned to Charlotte and began a career in banking and eventually made branch manager before leaving in 1985. He then went to work as a Safety Director with Weathergard INC. in Monroe, NC where he later retired. Mr. Mills helped start the Union County Vietnam Veterans Group several years ago. The group provided the Honor Guard for fallen heroes' burials in the Monroe area. Mr. Mills was a member of First Baptist Church of Pageland. He is predeceased by his siblings, Robert D. Mills, Susanne Mills Smith (Bobby), Alice June Mills Ashley and Samuel Hubbard Mills.
Mr. Richard Mills is survived by his loving wife of forty-six years, Anita Evans Mills of the home; son, Jeffrey Mills (Amy) of Chapin, SC; daughter, Janice M. Deese (Rodney) of Pageland, SC; sister, Kathryn Mills Bliven (Larry) of Salisbury, MD; brother-in-law Earl Ashley of Fayetteville, NC; sisters-in-law, Pat Mills of Toccoa, GA and Shelley Mills of Goldsboro, NC; grandchildren, Jacob Landon Mills and Kailey Reece Mills and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Pageland.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Pageland with Dr. Joel Dale officiating. Inurnment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park of Pageland.
